YouthBuild Boston is celebrating 10 years of helping Boston residents keep warm through its annual Neighborhood Housewarming event. We have already experienced a few cold mornings…and winter has yet to officially arrive. Neighborhood Housewarming brings together contractors, nonprofits, and volunteers to improve energy efficiency in homes throughout southern Boston.
Neighborhood Housewarming is a critical element of our strategy to create safe, warm, and healthy homes. For the families we serve, Housewarming teams will install plastic window insulation on more than 740 windows, in 51 homes owned by low-income, elderly residents. The insulation keeps heat in the home, improving residents’ comfort and reducing energy costs. Each window insulated means less fuel burned, less carbon emitted, and more money in the pocket of a deserving homeowner.
Building on decades of experience working with and for the communities of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan, non-profit developer, Nuestra Comunidad, and YouthBuild Boston, a non-profit building trades training program, formed the Partnership for Greening Blue Hill Ave in 2009 to promote energy efficiency and green jobs throughout the Blue Hill Avenue corridor of southern Boston.

Particularly in structures with single pane glass, plastic sheeting, installed in the fall and removed in the spring, is a great way to improve comfort, reduce energy use, and help the planet by lowering carbon emissions.
