More About Our Organization

Home Energy Efficiency Team

HEET (Home Energy Efficiency Team) is a grassroots nonprofit that organizes energy-upgrade parties in the buildings of nonprofits. Volunteers reduce drafts and install water and electrical efficiency devices under the guidance of skilled team leaders. In this way HEET teaches hands-on skills to the volunteers that they can use in their own homes, while lowering the energy bills for the nonprofit. HEET brings communities together to combat climate change in a hands-on practical way.

The work that HEET does has been recognized through an EPA Environmental Merit Award, a Cambridge GoGreen Award and a MCAN Climate Superstar Award. www.HEETma.com.

More About Our Project

You pay for the necessary materials such as efficient light bulbs (CFLs), low flow shower heads and aerators, caulk, spray foam and Reflectix. This cost pays for an 'average' low-income nonprofit in Cambridge, MA. Because many low-income nonprofits defer building maintenance for decades, HEET's work can improve the building performance considerably, harvesting a lot of financial and carbon savings. The nonprofit can use these savings to serve its community instead.

NGE-Estimated Project Metrics

  • Lifetime savings are 189.5 lbs CO2 and $35.47 energy costs per dollar donated
  • A $5 donation eliminates 948 lbs of CO2 and saves $177.34
  • A $25 donation eliminates 4,738 lbs of CO2 and saves $886.71
  • A $10.55 donation eliminates one ton of CO2 and saves $374.26

NGE Cool Green Info

Decreasing drafts keeps a building more comfortable, with less holes for vermin to get in and with a higher resale value. Installation of electrical- and water-saving devices such as CFLs, Smart Strips, low-flow faucet heads and shower heads can save a lot of energy, water and money for very little expense. Green energy barnraisings such as provided by HEET are growing in popularity. Check in your community to see if there is an energy club, or a group dedicated to making your town greener, and consider volunteering!

I had home my Cambridge home weatherized by a team of HEET volunteers. (I wrote about it on my blog - http://www.eswow.org/content/barn-raisings-communities-coming-together-stay-warm-and-be-energy-efficient) I haven't been able to volunteer much recently, so I'm happy to support this work with a donation.

My husband and I attend First Church in Cambridge, Congregational, UCC, which is eager to reduce its carbon footprint and be good stewards of God's precious earth. We purchase Consumer Supported Agriculture, through joint buying of local produce by church members. We have benefitted significantly from the volunteer efforts of HEET, and we are beginning efforts at composting. Our church offers bicycle racks, and is only a couple of blocks from Harvard Square T-Station.(11 Garden St. Come partake in the worship of God on Sunday mornings at 11 AM. Consider joining our Earth Stewardship Team. At home, we set our thermostat to 66, 55 at night, and are comfortable in sweaters. We have reduced electrical consumption by 14% in the last year. We enjoy using carbonsalon.com.

So much of the time energy efficiencies only happen for those with means. This is neither fair nor environmentally intelligent. We need the HEETs and NGEs of the world to spread the green!

Being a commercial interior designer, I know the importance of good lighting. The change to energy efficient lighting really helps nonprofits and low income projects keep within their budgets.

The HEET program supported by NGE is a great avenue for building local community support of energy efficiency projects as well as educating the community to the many positives this program can provide. Low income non-profits are desperate for funds, so energy efficiency provides another sustainable means to support operations.
