More about the project

The Ely Area Senior Citizens Center in Ely, Minn. has secured $30,000 through grants and donations for a solar panel installation project. But to fully maximize the energy savings of this project, the center needs to perform several weatherization improvements, including installing new energy-efficient doors, replacing lighting fixtures, and purchasing weatherization stripping and caulk. These combined green energy projects will help keep the senior members comfortable and warm in the brutal Minnesotan winters, save the center thousands of dollars a year, and significantly reduce Ely's carbon footprint. More about the senior center and Ely, Minn.

The Ely Area Senior Citizens Center was established in 1977, however, the building itself -- a former retail mechanical garage -- was constructed in the early 1900s. The nonprofit provides social and volunteer opportunities -- as well as public transportation -- for senior residents in a 725 square mile area. More than 100 seniors use the center on a weekly basis.

Ely, Minn. is a small town 250 miles northeast of Minneapolis. Often referred to as “the end of the road” because of its proximity to the wilderness, this rural community is filled with nature enthusiasts and adventurers – the famed polar explorer Will Steger is a proud Ely resident.

We recycle and try to conserve energy as best as we can. We believe we can all do better to conserve and live greener to keep our earth clean and unpolluted. We only get to go through once, so we better do it right for the next generations to come. We try to support our seniors and conservation efforts of our community. Thank you for your help!
