Are there minimum requirements to purchase a Renewable Energy Investment Note (REIN)?
The minimum amount to purchase a REIN is $1,000 and the minimum investment term is one year.
Are REINs FDIC insured?
While NGE places the utmost care on investing security, and has never had a default occur on any of its outgoing loans, REINs are not FDIC insured. This means that there is risk that you could lose all, or part of, your investment. You should consult with an investing professional if you are unsure whether REINs are right for you.
How do REINs compare to other green investments?
The most common type of green investment on the market today is called a screened mutual fund. These funds contain stocks from 'cleantech' companies such as solar panel manufacturers. The most important difference between REINs and this type of investment is that when you invest in a REIN, you directly fund the creation of green energy projects in the US. Companies such as solar panel manufactures, to be competitive, must sell their products all over the world. Because of this, funds, even those labeled as green investments, have no way to guarentee that they will result in benefits to American communities, or reduce America's dependence on fossil fuel.
Are REINs tax-deductible?
While NGE is a registered 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, a REIN investment is not tax-deductible. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to NGE, please click here for our donations page.
Will my REIN interest rate change?
REIN interest rates are fixed at the time of purchase and will remain fixed over the duration of the note period.
Who can buy a REIN?
At this time, individuals, companies and organizations residing or registered in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont can purchase a REIN. If you are interested in purchasing a REIN but do not reside in one of these states, please call NGE at (617) 624-3688.
