More about the project

The Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSS/NCA) -- a nonsectarian, multi-service organization in Washington D.C. -- has a two-step plan to improve the overall efficiency of its building. The first phase is a lighting retrofit project that will replace the nonprofit's fluorescent lamps with  higher-efficiency models.

The project will reduce LSS/NCA's electric bill by $58,032 over its lifetime, and these savings will allow the organization to make additional improvement to the dated building.

Melissa Graves, executive director of LSS/NCA said, "[The organization] wants to do capital improvements that increase the building's energy efficiency, and to be an environmental role model for other nonprofits in our community, our neighbors, and our clients."  Read more about this project's specifics.

More about the Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area

Founded in 1917, LSS/NCA is a nonsectarian, multi-service nonprofit organization whose mission is "to walk with those in need, and mobilize community partners to provide services that offer hope and rebuild lives."

Each year, LSS/NCA serves more than 3,000 low-income families through its four main programs:

  1. Adoption and Foster Care
  2. Refugee and Immigrant Services
  3. Disaster Response
  4. Youth Haven Camps

The LSS/NCA building was built in the 1950s and was originally a factory. In 1993, the facility was turned into a nonprofit office space, and it's in desperate need of energy efficiency improvements.

Without the political will at the national level, the green revolution to renew America will happen at the grassroots level thanks to organizations like NGE tapping the good will of citizens across the country helping nonprofits and houses of worship on renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. I'm glad to be supporting this project.
